June 1932.                     Mr. William Pool.

Mr. Willaim Pool, an old resident of Papanui (Christchurch), died on Thursday last. he was born in Dumfriesshire, Scotland, in 1854, and came to New Zealand at the age of twenty. He joined the Otago Police Force in 1875, and was stationed at Queenstown, and afterwards at Cromwell, Clyde, Roxburgh, and Kaitangata. For two years he acted on the gold escort between Queenstown and Dunedin. In the early days of the goldfields Mr. Pool, on one occasion, had three cases of murder at the same time. On going to Canterbury he was stationed at Southbridge for twelve years, and then was in charge at Papanui for ten years prior to retirement. While at Southbridge Mr. Pool was Master of the Progress Masonic Lodge No. 22, and was also Grand Master of the Manchester Unity Oddfellows. Since retiring Mr. Pool took an active interest in public affairs, being on the executive of the Papanui Burgesses Association, and was for several years a residents representative on the Memorial Hall  Committee, and held the position of treasurer. He was one of the founders of the Papanui Bowling Club, as well as the club at Southbridge. As a bowler he was a noted skip, and the honours board at Papanui bears his name several times as winner of the singles, doubles, and rinks championship. Mr. Pool is survived by his widow, three sons, and three daughters, Mr. William Pool (Dunedin), Constable Thomas Pool (Cheviot), Mr. James Pool (Wellington), Mrs. W. Sanders (Christchurch), Mrs. A. B. Truscott (Christchurch), and Miss E. Pool (Papanui).
