Theft Of Lead From A Pump.

James Telfer (15) and Wm. Smith (12), schoolboys, Annan, pled guilty, before Sheriff Hope in Dumfries Sheriff Court on Monday, to stealing the lead spout from a pump on a field at Hayknowes, Annan, on 3rd May. Smith also pled guilty to stealing two feet of lead piping from Newington Lodge, Annan, on 4th May. The Sheriff sentenced the elder lad to ten days imprisonment and detention for three years in Stranraer Reformatory, while he dismissed Smith with an admonition on account of his youth, and on a promise being made by his parents that they would exercise greater supervision over him in the future.-- Patrick Quinn, licensed broker and dealer in old metal, Annan, was afterwards charged, under the Prevention of Crimes Act, with purchasing the lead from the lads, it being under the statutory weight of 112 lbs. He pled not guilty, and was defended by Mr. T. B. Anderson. Evidence having been led as to the lead being missing from the pump at Hayknowes, Wm. Smith was put in the witness box and stated that he sold Quinn the stolen lead in a bag along with some rags, explaining to him that the lead was there. Jas. Telfer, who was next examined, said that he put the lead in the bag for the purpose of making the rags weigh more, and that Quinn was not informed it was there. Supt. Pool, Dumfries, deponed to getting the lead, which weighed 3½ lbs, on Quinn's premises, and to being informed that he bought it from the boys. -- The Sheriff, in view of the conflicting evidence given by the lads, found the charge not proven.
