Police Sergeant's Mysterious Death

The body found on Monday in the river Liane, near Boulogne, on the French side of Dover Straits, has been identified as that of Police Sergeant David Pool, Grange Road Station, London. The identification was first established by means of a bunch of keys found on the body. As stated in our issue of Wednesday, the collar bore the name "Pool," and on one of the fingers there was a gold signet ring with the monogram "D. P." and inscribed "Mater, September, 1895." An insurance tag attached to keys found in one of the pockets bore the name "British Key and Property Registry, A. Cowper, manager, 192 Hope Street, Glasgow. Number 69443;" and on the reverse "Return key to 64 Finsbury Pavement, E. C.." Deceased a few weeks ago attended the funeral of his father, the late Superintendent Pool of the Dumfriesshire constabulary. Shortly after returning to London he was seized with an attack of influenza, and on recovering he appears to have gone to France for a holiday. How he got into the water is shrouded in mystery. A correspondent of a Glasgow newspaper states: "Boulogne is acquiring an unenviable notoriety for mysteries in crime, and the news of the death of Sergeant Pool point to another tragedy similar to others that have taken place at the French seaport town in recent years. How Sergeant Pool came by his death is at present a mystery, but circumstances warrant the inference of foul play. Only a few months ago a schoolmaster from Norwich was found dead on the cliffs." A brother of the deceased, Mr. Robert Pool, who is engaged at Newbie Engineering Works, Annan, has gone to Boulogne to confirm the identification. Sergeant Pool, who was thirty-eight years of age and unmarried, was well known in the district and was highly respected.
