The Late Superintendent Pool

It was with deep regret that we found ourselves called upon on Saturday to record the death of Mr. David Pool, the veteran Superintendent and Deputy Chief Constable of the county force, which occurred that morning at two o'clock. Mr. Pool was a native of Castle Douglas, where he was born on "Burn's Day," the 25th January, sixty-five years ago. He joined the Dumfriesshire Constabulary in the spring of 1859, and after being initiated into the duties at headquarters was stationed for some time at Thornhill, then at Sanquar, and in 1862 he went to Lockerbie on promotion to the rank of sergeant. Subsequently he was appointed inspector, and in 1877 superintendent and deputy chief constable. In the course of his lengthened service he had been in charge at all the important centres of the county, over the whole of which he exercised supervision during the last three-and-twenty years. He possessed a remarkably intimate knowledge of the whole district. He was a smart and capable officer, possessed of a shrewd judgment, and a man of fine presence, popular with the members of the force, trusted by his superiors, and respected by the community. In many important cases, both civil and criminal, he was a leading witness, his knowledge of the Solway and of the intricacies of fishery laws being accurate and extensive. The late Chief Constable, Mr. Jones, had him a colleague on whose judgment he placed great reliance, and the same relations of mutual confidence and esteem subsisted between him and Chief Constable Gordon. He was devoted to the duties of his office, and a man ever jealous of the reputation of the county in matters both criminal and municipal. For fifteen months he had suffered from a painful malady, and had been relieved from active duty since 22nd December, 1889, his colleagues considerately overtaking the work which would otherwise have devolved upon him. His suffering he bore with fortitude and patience. Mrs. Pool predeceased her husband several years ago. He is survived by two sons, one of whom is a sergeant in the Metropolitan police force, the other employed at the Newbie engineering works. The funeral takes place this afternoon to the Dumfries Cemetery, leaving the County Buildings in English Street at two o'clock. A large contingent of the constabulary will attend as a last mark of respect.
